Real jars are heavy, you can buy lightweight theatrical versions made from foam, but I decided to make my own for a show. I estimate that the process took five days, due to drying time between layers of newspaper and coats of paint. The 8.5 wide is comfortable for my size 10 (sometimes wide) feet. If your feet need more support or if the classroom floor is hard (tile, concrete, etc), consider jazz shoes or dance sneakers.
