New Year, New You?

Do you make resolutions for the new year? Goals? Intentions? Whatever you call them, taking a bellydance class could be part of your list!

Several years ago, I started setting dance goals for myself. They gave me something specific to focus on, whether it was to learn a new style or prop, create a special choreography, or venture into hosting and teaching workshops. "If you build it, they will come" tended to be true. Setting a goal to learn more about folkloric styles led me to studying with Sahra Saeeda via her Journey Through Egypt courses (which changed my dance path in so many ways). Creating a vintage style tribute choreography manifested in "Raks Katy" for the 2017 Virginia Theatrical Bellydance show. Opportunities for teaching workshops have opened up for me in 2018 and coming up in 2019.

Belly Dance Resolutions

If you've never tried bellydance, if not now, when? You might fall in love with it like so many others (including me!) At least you'll know you've tried it.

If you have taken a class before and took a break for a few months, or even years, we'd love to have you dance with us. You know there's still a shimmy inside of you.

If you have been taking classes with me regularly, I'd love to know what goals you are setting for yourself. I'd love to help you work towards them!

Here's to whatever wonderful things are waiting for all of us in 2019!

Bellydance Gifts for the Holidays 2018

Looking for gift inspiration for your favorite belly dancer? Here's a quick list with seven recommendations. Most of the links are either for Amazon.com or Bellydance.com.

Square sequins hipscarf (I love these!), available on Amazon or Bellydance.com

Gold hipscarf
that's flashy, but quiet.

Not all silk veils are equal! Here are two reliable sources that I recommend: Nahari silks on Amazon and those sold by Bellydance.com.

If your dancer likes the sparkly stuff, how about a necklace set like this?

The more we dance, the more gear we have to haul around! I love these BlueQ bags.

If your dancer has a DVD player, this Combination Nation set is a great buy.

Belly dancers of all styles (oriental, fusion, etc) need a little make-up to bring out their features for performances. A gift card for Sephora or Ulta is always appreciated.

Bellydance Music for Practicing

New students often ask where to find music to practice what they have learned in class. Here are some quick links to albums with helpful tracks for students:

50 All Time Greatest Belly Dance Hits
Esmerim
Tablatastic

I struggled with how to title this because all Middle Eastern music can somehow inform you as a dancer, help you learn to listen carefully, and be a tool for "making the music visible." However, sometimes we want to work on specific technique so that the movement flows more easily from our bodies. We gravitate towards specific songs when we want to perfect a travel step, drill a hip pattern, or rev up those shimmies. You can easily find songs, even playlists you YouTube, Spotify, etc. Here are some songs I use in class that you can download to create your own playlists.

Medium tempo
(travel steps, technique drills)
Ya Mnaanaa
Electric Bedouin
Eshtaktillak
Underworld
Oriental Lament
Men Elaila Maak
Daran Akh Daran

Fast tempo (quick drills)
Shouf Il Banat
Ya Ba_Aeen El Hawa Mix
Oyoun Sandra

Slow/Medium tempo (smooth & connected movements or steps)
Love Night (remix of Leylet Hob)
In the Fairground
Gardens of Delight
1001 Ya Leil
Huwaida

Slow tempo (very controlled, slinky movements)
Mazewalking
Aayouch

Shimmy Drills
Stamina
The Captivation
Egyptian Drummer
Ashan battootah
Habbi

Rhythms (one great source: Guy Schalom's Tablatastic album)
Maqsoum
Malfouf
Masmoudi Sogheir
Masmoudi Kebir
Chifte-Telli 8:4
Saeedi 4/4

Upbeat pop songs
Current recommendations will be outdated very quickly, so I recommend searching YouTube and/or Spotify for "arab pop music 2019."
